Police arrest 10 pro-Biafra supporters
– Ten more members of the MASSOB were apprehended by the police over Onitsha mayhem two weeks ago
– The spokesman of the group said the police had no reason for the arrest of pro-Biafra activists as they only held a peaceful march on May 30 to commemorate Biafra heroes
Two weeks after the commemoration of Biafra Anniversary Day by members of the group the police have arrested ten members of Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Cross River state.
The spokesperson of the group, Okon Archibong, told Vanguard that the state coordinators of the group, Samuel Okah together with nine others on June 13 were apprehended in Ikom and Ogoja.
The others include Shedrack Chinelo, Chief Joseph Ekperebi, Michael Adah, James Ekeme, Adah Johnson.
He said: “We have not had any other activity outside the May 30th commemoration of Biafra Anniversary Day but last night police from Ikom division went to the home our state coordinator, Samuel Okah and nine other persons and arrested them”.
Archibong added that the police did not explain the reason why pro-Biafra supporters were detained and taken to the Ikom police station.
According to the MASSOB spokesman, during the May 30 anniversary, the Cross River members of group only organised a peaceful march in accordance to the directives of Ralph Uwazurike who directed for none violence during the anniversary.
“I have gone to see them at the Ikom police station this morning and they are in the cell and I asked what offence they committed because during our anniversary march, we did not engage in any confrontation with anybody or group, not even with the police,” he added.
John Eluu, the police public relations officer in the state has said he was not briefed on the matter.
This came two weeks after the pro-Biafran supporters commemorating the anniversary of the defunct Biafra Republic clashed with the Nigerian army in Onitsha, Anambra state.
Late General Ojukwu had led the secession of the old Eastern Region and declared the region the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967.
